JC010: Mud volcanoes and submarine canyons

The ROV at work....taking core samples

First the ROV carefully picks up a core and holds it vertically above the sea floor.  Then core is firmly pushed into the mud and twisted gently.  Finally the core is returned to the core tray, careful not to bang or knock it as this may loose mud from the base.

Occasionally a core tube is dropped.  When this happens the ROV picks it up and replaces it into the tray.  If it can be used still the ROV will then use it to take a core.
