JC010: Mud volcanoes and submarine canyons

The Bathysnap camera

The bathysnap is a camera mounted on a framework. It is lowered into the water and left there for a period of time.  The camera is set to take pictures at set intervals and then store the images, which are then collected when the Bathysnap is returned to the surface.

Here, the Bathysnap is being brought to the surface.

As the rear guard rails have been taken down the crew bringing the camera back on board have to wear harnesses tied to the ship.

Here the Bathysnap is being moved across the ship to be stored out of the way.  Spot the ropes which are used by crew members to control the movement of the load as the ship rolls in the waves.
