Jez's Top 5 Useful Machines...

...No 4: the 'A' Frame

Machine: 'A'-frame

What it does:

The ‘A’ frame is basically what it sounds like – a big A-shaped frame.

It is used for lowering and raising equipment over the aft (rear) of the ship. On this cruise it has been mainly used for Agassiz trawls, which is when a small framed net is dragged along the ocean floor behind the ship to capture samples of marine life.

The safety fence is removed when sending out and bring in equipment.

Where it is (X marks the spot):

Who is in charge of it:
Mark Squibb (again - pictured right)

Certificates you need to use it:
As with the hydroboom, you don’t need a certificate, but you need to be signed off by Mark in your training log book. This means you can use it onboard within this company.

How to get these:
Practice, under supervision of Mark.
