JC010: Mud volcanoes and submarine canyons

Jez's Top 5 Useful Machines...

...No 3: the Starboard Gantry

Machine: Starboard Gantry

What it does:
The starboard gantry looks like it is part of the same machine as the hydroboom (number 5 on Jez’s list), but this is just because they are the same colour and pretty much the same place, with the starboard gantry just a bit higher up. Like the hydroboom, the starboard gantry is also used to lift equipment over the starboard side of the ship, but is capable of lifting much heavier objects – up to 25 tonnes! The starboard gantry can also be used to lift equipment over the aft (rear) of the ship due to the way the wires can be configured.

The starboard gantry is directly above the winch room and is connected to winches by the wires. You can see right down into the winch room (look at the picture on the right) by looking down along the wires – it’s a pretty long way down!

Where it is (X marks the spot):

Who is in charge of it:
Mark Squibb (pictured right) - you might have heard of him before...

He is in overall charge, but the crew members on watch at the time of operation are in charge whilst it is operational (the same goes for the hydroboom and the A-frame).

Certificates you need to use it:
Again, as with the hydroboom, and A-frame, you don’t need a certificate, but you need to be signed off by Mark in your training log book. This means you can use it onboard within this company.

How to get these:
Practice, under supervision of Mark.

Training:
Practice, under supervision of Mark.
