JC24: Dating volcanoes on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Cruise diary

Friday 23 May 2008

Today we departed Ponta Delgada in the Azores at 9.00 am GMT and headed toward our survey area.  Underway at last!  During the morning we had wonderful views of Sao Miguel island and its volcanoes as we rounded its western end and headed north.  The weather is good, only light winds and a good forecast for the weekend.

Our estimated time of arrival is breakfast time on Sunday. With such a short passage time we are very busy preparing all the equipment and making plans for our initial survey.  We had a safety briefing, followed by a presentation of the background to the science we plan to do.  Meanwhile we are busy unpacking, setting up computers, etc.

More soon!
