The UK's brand-new research vessel, the RRS James Cook, is carrying a team of scientists to the Fifteen-Twenty Francture Zone on the Mid-Atlantic ridge to try and discover why part of the oceanic crust is missing from the area. Led by University of Durham's Roger Searle and ably assisted by Chris MacLeod (University of Cardiff) and Bramley Murton (National Oceanography Centre Southampton), the team will spend 6 weeks using sonar equipment and a robotic rock drill to probe the secrets of the Earth's tectonic process in this area.
